About Joining
Permanent employees of Imperial Limited and Motus Holdings Limited, its associated and subsidiary companies and former subsidiaries or associated companies are eligible to be members of the Scheme.
Membership is compulsory according to the Imperial Limited and Motus Holdings Limited Medical Aid Membership Policy unless you are registered as a dependant on your spouse or partner's medical scheme. If you choose to remain on your spouse or partner's medical scheme as a dependant, you must provide proof of membership.
Your membership will be without any waiting periods or penalties if you join Imperialmed within 90 days from the date of your employment, unless you are a dependant on your spouse or partner's medical scheme.
Seconded employees
A member and his/her dependants will not forfeit any benefits or interest in the Scheme on the grounds of having been seconded for employment, in or outside the borders of the Republic or South Africa, but will continue to be a member of the Scheme. Terms and Conditions
- schedule General waiting periods
If, prior to joining, the applicant and their nominated dependants where not previously covered by a registered medical scheme, a 3-month general waiting period may be enforced where day-to-day claims will not be covered by the Scheme.
General waiting periods do not apply to new employees, provided that they join the Scheme within 90 days of commencing employment with the Imperial Limited and Motus Holdings Limited. This will also apply to their immediate family. Should you marry or have a baby after joining, you need to register your dependant within 30 days of the event or, alternatively, underwriting will be applied to your new dependant.
- schedule Condition-specific waiting periods
If, prior to joining, the applicant and their nominated dependants were not beneficiaries of a medical scheme for a period of at least 90 days, a 12-month condition-specific waiting period may be enforced for any pre-existing condition during which period the beneficiary cannot claim for treatment for these conditions.
Condition-specific waiting periods do not apply to new employees, provided that they join the Scheme within 90 days of commencing employment with the Imperial Limited and Motus Holdings Limited. This will also apply to their immediate family. Should you marry or have a baby after joining, you need to register your dependant within 30 days of the event or, alternatively, underwriting will be applied to your new dependant.
- schedule Late-joiner penalties
If a member or dependant joins Imperial Motus Med and they are over the age of 35 with breaks in their medical aid coverage history, the Scheme can legally increase their contributions by applying late-joiner penalties, which results in increased monthly contributions.
Late-joiner penalties do not apply to new employees, provided that they join the Scheme within 90 days of commencing employment with the Imperial Limited and Motus Holdings Limited. This will also apply to their immediate family, i.e. spouse, children and other adult dependants. Should you marry or have a baby after joining, you need to register your dependant within 30 days of the event or, alternatively, underwriting will be applied to your new dependant.
It is important that you obtain proof of membership of all previous medical schemes in order to reduce the late-joiner penalties, failing which, the late-joiner penalties will be charged until you are able to supply the required proof of previous medical scheme cover.
